Summary of actions in BKO.
Story
Sagi is a rookie member of the Dark Service, and is a part of the group's biggest assignment yet: the assassination of Emperor Olgan of Alfard. Though he is skeptical, he goes along with the mission, using his friend Guillo as his paramachina, though the mission turns awry when the Emperor was already dead and Sagi is accused of murder by the very captain who gave him and his men the order. During their escape, Sagi and Guillo fight a gigantic monster unleashed by a mysterious woman named Valara, and Guillo enters an equally mysterious powered up state to defeat it while Sagi writhes in pain to his confusion. Upon the monster's defeat, Sagi passes out, and has a dream where he interacts with people who knew him and visits a wiped out village with only peoples' souls as remnants, before waking up.

On the Run
He and Guillo escape through the sewers thanks to help from a man named Geldoblame, an assistant to Alfard's quaestor, Verus; Geldoblame suggests that the two pay Verus a visit once things have died down to figure out the truth behind that evening's events. Once Sagi and Guillo successfully escape to the city of Mintaka, they decide to board a ship to Sheratan, their hometown, but are quickly ambushed by soldiers. Though the two hold their ground well, they are eventually cornered by a man named Giacomo, and are only saved when a woman named Milly pops in and fights alongside them. After winning the fight, the three leave for the island of Hasssaleh, where Sheratan is located. On the way, Milly reveals that she ran away from her luxurious yet sheltered life at home to explore the world, wanting to go along with Sagi and Guillo, which, despite Guillo's protests, Sagi allows. While in Sheratan, they learn of a monster terrorizing the lake, which many have attempted to face but not returned from. After fighting the monster, which turns out to be the same kind as the one that attacked them previously, Guillo defeats it once more, and the group returns—however, they find that the village has been raided by the Dark Service under the command of Valara, who attacks the group in a gigantic mech known as a machina arma. When all hope seems lost, the monster from before leaps out and attacks the mech, though it stands little chance against the mech's laser, which tears the island in half. During the attack, Sagi returns to the same dream world briefly, this time with Guillo and Milly coming with him, though the latter two remain unseen by the other people in the dream itself. Noting that the people within the dream call Sagi "Marno" and are familiar with him, the three decide to follow the group to try to better understand the situation. After defeating a monster in the dream world, the three are sent back to Sheratan in time to see the Dark Service retreat. Sagi passes out from exhaustion, but after waking up, the three decide to return to Alfard. While in Mintaka, the three are able to sneak by the Dark Service due to Olgan's funeral resulting in many people in attendance, as Olgan's passing also indicated the coming of a new emperor, with the two candidates being Lord Baelheit and Quaestor Verus. After they give their speeches, the three begin to head to Verus's residence when they are hit with an explosion caused by indiscriminate terrorism. After helping the civilians injured from the attack, the three visit Verus thanks to the prior assistance of Geldoblame, where he proposes an alliance with Sagi: in exchange for striking the murder accusation from his record and assisting the orphanage that Sagi's mother, Gena, runs in Sheratan, he wants Sagi to ally the leaders of the other floating islands to fight back against Lord Baelheit's attempts at promachination and using the power of the monsters they've fought, which he calls Umbras, and help save the world. Understandably taken aback by Quaestor Verus's offer to help save the world, Sagi requests time to think over the request. At Milly's suggestion, he, she, and Guillo visit the mining village of Azha, a bustling place famous for its flame ice, for a change of pace to help clear Sagi's mind. After a brief visit, he informs the two that he had actually made up his mind long before, and had intended to help the quaestor from the very beginning. They return to Quaestor Verus's residence and inform him of this decision; though the quaestor initially specifically asks the help of him and Guillo, Sagi accepts on the condition that Milly be allowed to join them, which is accepted.

Working Under Verus
With all said and done, Verus tasks Sagi with investigating the terrorist attacks in Mintaka in order to gauge his abilities; information suggests the mastermind behind the attacks is an Azhani citizen known as the Mourning Mistral, and the three investigate with help of Mintakan soldiers. By gathering evidence from various Azhani citizens and the scene of the crime itself, the Mourning Mistral is revealed to be Bein, a man that Sagi befriended on his first visit. After Bein runs away as to not get caught, Sagi, Guillo, and Milly manage to track him down in the village's lava caves, where Bein turns into an Umbra—though hesitant, Sagi fights the monster on Verus's orders, but is ultimately unsuccessful in killing it. Before Guillo can defeat it, Valara once again shows up and begins to ruthlessly attack it, and once again, Sagi and the others are sent to the same dream world, where they discover that they are somehow under the sky and not on a floating island, before they are sent back to the lava caves in time to see Valara leaving, and make a quick escape themselves due to Valara's machina arma having shaken up the cave's lower strata, despite simultaneously being attacked by the Lord of the Lava Caves, a giant fish-like monster. With the job done, the three return to the quaestor's residence, where Verus reveals that Sagi will need to talk to Lord Baelheit himself in order to fully get the accusation stricken—a task which proves itself surprisingly easy. Afterwards, Verus tasks Sagi with venturing to the continent of Diadem in order to obtain the support of King Ladekahn.
