Spirit Choices

From Baten Kaitos Wiki

At various points in the Baten Kaitos series, the player is prompted to choose one of (usually) two dialogue options. These choices generally don't affect plot progression, but instead influence the bond between the player and the protagonists.

The exact bond value is never shown to the player. Its effects differ between the games.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

Kalas and Xelha have separate bond values. The higher a character's bond value, the more often they will get a chance to use a spirit finisher.

When Kalas or Xelha play the second to last possible card in their combo, one of the cards in their hand may turn into a spirit finisher card.

There are six spirit finishers - one for each element. Their ATK stats are all 70 (50 elemental) multiplied by the user's class level.

In Corellia's palace, just before the party sets off to infiltrate Cor Hydrae, Kalas' dialogue depends on his bond value.

If Kalas' bond value is 50 or greater, he will express appreciation to the player, and a dialogue prompt will appear:

Well...this is the big day. The end of the line.
Hey, listen, <player>...
This may be it for us.

Ending

Kalas' bond value increases by 1500 when the true final battle begins. If the player uses a spirit finisher, the boss is instantly defeated.

Kalas' dialogue in one of his flashbacks depends on his bond value.

If the bond value is greater than 1540:

<player>? So, that's your name...
Not bad.
My name is Kalas. We're a team now, you and I.
Well, hang in there for me, okay, <player>?
<player>?

If the bond value is 1540 or less:

Baten Kaitos Origins

Increasing the bond value results in more "spirit draws". A spirit draw puts the best card for the current situation into the "NEXT" slot, no matter how far into the deck it would have been.
For example, when someone needs healing, a healing item is drawn, or when a spirit number is missing in a combo, a card with that number is drawn.

Spirit draws are indicated by a glow on the card as well as a high-pitched sound effect.


The chance of a spirit draw occurring is calculated as follows:

Bond value * 0.09% + bonus

"Bonus" is the sum of all Heartflask and Heartenbrace effects from the quest magnus inventory:

  • Heartflask (stage 2): 1%
  • Heartflask (stage 3): 3%
  • Heartflask (stage 4): 5%
  • Heartflask (stage 5): 10%
  • Heartenbrace: 0.3%
  • Potted Heartenbrace: 0.3%

Secret Dialogue

If the bond value is at least 100 at the end of the Anuenue chapter, there will be some extra dialogue lines during the flight to Alfard.

Regular dialogue:

Guillo: That girl's going to be some serious competition.

Milly: Competition? What are you talking about, dingbat?

Guillo: Don't play dumb. This is what you call a love quadrangle.

Milly: "Quadrangle"? "Quad"?! Where are you getting "quad" from? Assuming you're counting me—there's me, Sagi, and Lolo... Who's the fourth?

Guillo: Me.

Milly: You?!

Guillo: Is that so wrong?

Milly: Yes! I...I mean, no...

Guillo: All right, then.

Extra dialogue:

Ending

The choices "Let him go" and "Let her go" unlock some additional cutscenes for the ending sequence. However, they also skip some unique battles and thus may cause the field guide to be incomplete until the next playthrough.
